South Hill Elementary Fall Festival and Ithaca College's Community Math Day

Fall 2022

In the Fall of 2022, I participated in two different community services projects! This correlated to my goal, which was to do two community service projects, as I've typically only done one. The first one I participated in was at South Hill Elementary's Fall Festival! 3 other students and I went to their "Trunk-or-treating" event, and showed off some super conductors!

The second event I helped with was Community Math Day! Another student and I ran the table for the Society of Physics Students, and had a circuit challenge for children! It was great, and we really wowed all the kids! They were ages 3-10, and they really loved the circuits!

Beach Clean-Up - Elk Neck State Park

This semester, I decided to do a project that was related to environmental issues, something I have not had the chance to volunteer for my college career. Environmental issues are extremely important to me, as an avid hiker. I decided to walk down a stretch of beach on the Chesapeake Bay, in Elk Neck State Park, and pick up all the trash I saw. The beach had looked like it had not been cleaned for a long time, as there was no real trail that led to it. I filled a few bags of trash, and made sure to sort plastics and recyclables in a separate bag.

South Hill Elementary Fall Festival

This semester, I organized the Society of Physics Students to set up a table at South Hill Elementary's Fall Festival. We had a superconductor demo running, and it looked like a ghost flying through a graveyard! We also had a celestial sphere set up, as well as a few other demos. The kids loved it, and it was awesome to see so many young minds being amazed by science!

Donation to Food Bank

Spring 2021

I decided to continue my support to St. Mark's Food Bank by donating a sum of $50 to them. If I was remote again this semester, I would have ran another food drive. Since I was not, I decided that the best decision would to donate a sum equal to the value of the food I donated before.

Thanksgiving Food Donation

Fall 2020

This semester, I went to a food bank the week before Thanksgiving on November 20th and donated multiple bags of food and toiletries. COVID-19 has hit my area hard, and the food banks have been in desperate need of support. Luckily, when I got to the food bank there were at least 20 cars there to donate food. I originally planned to get a picture of me at the food bank, but the people working there wanted us out ASAP in order to continue helping people, and I was unable to get the picture.

Food Donation

Spring 2020

Originally, I had wanted to go back to the Sciencenter on Earth Day for my Community Service project, but because of the COVID-19 outbreak that was impossible. So instead, I bought a bunch of food and toiletries to donate to my local food bank. On April 21, I drove to the food bank and gave the food to the collectors.

Fall 2019

Spooky Science

On Sunday, October 27th, a couple members of the Society of Physics students and I went into the town of Ithaca, to the local Sciencenter. There, we volunteered for their event known as "Spooky Science." My job was to run a table that had an activity called "Frankentoy" on it. Throughout the day, children (mainly ages 7 and below) would come up to the table, and I would teach them about the monster Frankenstein, and could relate it scientifically to genetic modification.
